Melissa Phytol Oil is an absolute oil derived from the leaves and flowers of the Melissa officinalis plant, also known as lemon balm. It is a perennial herb that belongs to the mint family and is native to the Mediterranean region but is now widely cultivated around the world in temperate climates. It grows to a height of 60 to 90 cm and has a square stem with opposite leaves that are heart-shaped and have serrated edges. The plant produces small white or yellow flowers that are rich in nectar and attract bees. These plants prefer well-drained soils, full sun, or partial shade and are relatively easy to grow. It can be propagated from seed, but it is more commonly grown from stem cuttings or root divisions. The plant requires regular watering and can be harvested several times throughout the growing season.

To extract the Melissa Phytol absolute oil, the solvent extraction process is followed in which flowers & leaves are dipped into the solvent. the oil is pale yellow in color and has a sweet, lemony aroma. This oil contains several chemical compounds but the chemical composition of the oil can vary depending on factors such as the geographic location of the plant, the time of harvest, and the extraction method used. However, the main components of the oil include Citral, which is a major component responsible for the lemony aroma of the oil, Geraniol, and Linalool which are terpene alcohol that is responsible for rose-like, floral scent, offering anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Neral is also present in this which is a terpene aldehyde that contributes to the lemony scent of the oil. It also includes Citronellal, a terpene aldehyde with a citrusy aroma that has insect-repelling properties, a Sesquiterpene Caryophyllene and Eucalyptol, a terpene oxide with a minty aroma that has expectorant and antimicrobial properties. The plant is native to the Mediterranean region, but it is now cultivated worldwide. The ancient Greeks and Romans valued lemon balm for its therapeutic properties, using it to treat a variety of ailments such as digestive issues, insomnia, anxiety, and wounds. In the Middle Ages, it became a popular ingredient in European monastic gardens and was often used in medicinal remedies. The term "Melissa" comes from the Greek word for "honeybee," as the plant was known to attract bees with its sweet scent.
