DESCRIPTION

Walnut oil is an edible oil that is extracted from the nuts of the Juglans regia tree, which is also known as the common walnut or Persian walnut tree. It is native to regions such as Persia, Central Asia, and the Mediterranean and today, these trees are cultivated in many parts of the world, including the United States, France, China, Turkey, and India. The walnut tree is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 30 meters tall and has a broad, spreading crown. The tree produces compound leaves with 5-9 leaflets and small, greenish flowers that appear in the spring. These trees are primarily grown for their nuts, which is a large, round, hard-shelled fruit that grows on the tree. The nut contains two halves, or cotyledons, which are rich in oil. The nut is enclosed in a fleshy outer hull that is removed before processing. These trees grow best in temperate climates with long, hot summers and cold winters. They require a minimum of 700 to 800 hours of chilling temperatures (below 45°F) during the dormant season. In general, walnut trees are well adapted to regions with a Mediterranean-type climate. It prefers well-drained soils with good water-holding capacity. They grow best in deep, fertile soils with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Heavy clay soils and poorly drained soils are not suitable for walnut cultivation. The trees can be propagated by seed or by grafting onto rootstock. Seedlings are usually used for timber production, while grafted trees are used for nut and oil production. Planting distances vary depending on the intended use of the trees, but a typical spacing for a commercial orchard is 30 to 35 feet between rows and 20 to 25 feet between trees within a row. They require regular maintenance, including pruning, fertilization, and pest control. Pruning is necessary to maintain tree shape, remove dead or diseased wood, and promote fruiting. Fertilization is necessary to maintain tree health and fruit production. Pest control is necessary to protect the trees from insects and diseases.
