Amber oil typically refers to a fragrance oil or essential oil that is derived from amber, a fossilized tree resin. It is recognized for its rich, warm and resinous aroma. This essential oil is not typically derived by using any botanical part of the tree or any plant instead it is derived from the resin produced by the trees. This resin which is used is derived from ancient trees, primarily from the Pinaceae family. It takes more than millions of years to form the resin through polymerization and fossilization. It is a thick substance which also helps to fill the gaps in the trees and cover the barks of the trees properly. Whenever any insects causes bites to the trees it immediately locks their jaws and preserves them within. Thus, it also helps in preventing any kind of diseases & infections in the trees which might be caused by the biting by the insects.

To produce the oil this resin is used and it is collected when it oozes out of the barks and trunks of the trees. The process of extracting this oil involves distilling or extracting the essential oils present in the resin. The resulting oil captures the distinctive scent of amber, which is often described as woody, musky, sweet, and slightly earthy. The scent of this oil is known for its depth and longevity.  It does not have a standardized chemical composition as it varies due to certain factors such as the specific source of the tree and the age of the amber. Moreover, natural oil contains a wide range of compounds and its chemical composition is complex. The major components found in it are; Succinic Acid, which is one of the major and most important components of the oil. Where Succinic acid is a dicarboxylic acid that is formed during the fossilization process of the resin.

It also contains another range of compounds including phenols, benzene derivatives, and other volatile organic compounds.Amber and the oil derived from it has a long history of use and it dates back to thousands of years.
