Calendula essential oil is derived from the flowers of the Calendula officinalis plant, also known as marigold. It is native to the Mediterranean region, including Southern Europe and North Africa. However, it is widely cultivated and naturalized in various regions around the world with temperate climates. This plant belongs to the Asteraceae family, which is also known as the daisy or sunflower family. It is an annual herbaceous plant that grows to a height of about 12-24 inches (30-60 cm). It has a branching stem and lanceolate, green leaves with a slightly hairy texture. The plant produces vibrant, daisy-like flowers with yellow or orange petals and a darker centre. The flowers are typically 1.5-2.5 inches (4-6 cm) in diameter.

This plant flowers from late spring to early fall, depending on the climate. The flowers are pollinated by insects and, if successfully pollinated, develop into fruit known as achenes. The achenes are small, and dry, and contain the seeds of the plant. These plants can be cultivated from seeds in gardens, fields, or even in pots or containers. They thrive in mild to cool climates. They prefer full sun exposure but can tolerate partial shade. The plant is relatively hardy and can tolerate a range of soil conditions, although it prefers well-drained soil. Calendula is a relatively low-maintenance annual plant, meaning it completes its lifecycle in one year. Flowers are the primary part of the plant used to extract calendula essential oil.

Harvesting typically begins when the flowers are fully open and vibrant in colour. Flowers are picked individually or entire flower heads are also harvested usually in the morning when the flowers contain the highest concentration of essential oils. The oil is obtained by steam distilling the flower heads to capture the aromatic compounds. It contains several chemical constituents that lead to oil’s therapeutic & aromatic properties. It has various Terpenoids including, Alpha-pinene, Beta-pinene, Limonene, Delta-cadinene, Alpha-copaene, Beta-caryophyllene, and Germacrene D. It has Flavonoids, which are a class of compounds known for their antioxidant properties. The flavonoids it contains are Quercetin, Kaempferol, and Isorhamnetin. It contains many volatile compounds including, Linalool, Geraniol, Citronellol, and Nerol that contribute to its characteristic aroma.

These are the major components found in the oil. However, the plant from which the oil is derived has some nutritional components. The flowers of Calendula officinalis contain certain compounds that contribute to their potential health benefits. These compounds include flavonoids, such as quercetin, isorhamnetin, and kaempferol.
