Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia) is native to France, commonly grown in the southern Mediterranean countries of Spain, Portugal, and Italy. Spike Lavender is an evergreen plant and a member of Lamiaceae family. Unlike true lavender, spike lavender grows in low altitudes and yield is also higher.
Lavender oil, Lavandin oil and Spike Lavender oil is commonly mistaken, in order to clarify it following points are to be considered:
1. These three oils are different, extracted from three different plants.
2. Lavender oil generally does not contain Camphor, Lavandin oil contain small quantity of camphor where as Spike Laverder contain larger quantity of Camphor.
3. Lavender oil is milder and sweeter; Lavandin oil is stronger and more pungent where as Spike Laverder oil is Camphoraceous.
