Vetiver oil is an essential oil derived from the roots of the Vetiveria zizanioides plant. It is a perennial grass that belongs to the Poaceae family. The plant is also known by several other names, including Khus, Chrysopogon zizanioides, and Vetiver grass. This plant is native to India, but it is now widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa and South America. The plant can grow up to six feet tall, and it has long, narrow leaves that grow in clumps from the base of the plant. The leaves are green and can grow up to five feet long. The plant produces tall, slender stems that can reach up to six feet in height.

The roots of the plant are particularly notable for their deep, extensive root system, which can grow up to 15 feet deep. The roots are thin and fibrous, and they have a strong, earthy aroma. The plant blooms flowers in the late summer and produces long, narrow inflorescences that are brownish-purple in colour. The flowers are not particularly showy and are mostly used for ornamental purposes. This plant typically grows in tropical and subtropical regions with high humidity and rainfall. It is highly adaptable and can grow in a variety of soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils. Vetiver grass is often grown in large plantations and it is typically propagated through vegetative propagation, where small portions of the plant's roots are cut and replanted to grow new plants.

Once established, it requires minimal maintenance, although it does need regular watering and occasional fertilization. The plant grows slowly and can take several years to mature, but once established it can grow up to six feet tall. The roots of the plant are harvested by hand, usually after two to three years of growth. The roots are then cleaned, chopped, and dried before being used in the production of the oil. In addition to its use in essential oil production, vetiver grass is also used for erosion control, as its deep roots can help to stabilize the soil and prevent erosion. It is also used in water conservation, as the plant can help to reduce water runoff and increase groundwater recharge.

The essential oil is extracted from the plant's roots through a steam distillation process. After cleaning & chopping the roots, these roots are soaked in water to extract the oil. The resulting oil is then separated from the water and other plant material through a distillation process. The resulting oil has a deep, earthy, and woody aroma and is used in a variety of applications, including perfumes, cosmetics, and aromatherapy. It is valued for its calming and grounding properties and is often used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve sleep. This oil has several potential health benefits due to its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.

It has been studied for its potential therapeutic benefits in treating various health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and insomnia. It may also have antifungal and antibacterial properties and may be useful in treating skin infections and wounds.
